There's no reason to believe that things would have been better, had  
Gore become president in 2001.

By all accounts, he was one of the more belligerent members of the  
Democratic administration that attacked Serbia, bombed Sudan and Iraq,  
and killed a million Iraqis with sanctions. (The half million dead  
children were "Worth it," said the Sec. of State.) There's no reason  
to suppose that he wouldn't have followed the constant US policy (from  
WWII on) in the Mideast, as Bush Jr. did.

In the 2000 campaign, Bush attacked Gore for "nation-building" - i.e.,  
the attack on Serbia. Americans who were against that sort of  
intervention didn't vote for Gore.

Of course, Bush (like Obama) lied about his warlike plans. But people  
believed both of them.

Nader voters (I'm one) were surely correct to vote for what they  
wanted - and not get it (as Debs said), rather than vote for what they  
didn't want and get it. --CGE
