In 1992, English writer and journalist Robert Harris published a novel, "Fatherland," set in an alternate history in which Nazi Germany won World War II. The novel begins in (still) Nazi Germany, in April 1964, in the week leading up to Adolf Hitler's 75th birthday. The novel was a bestseller in the UK, and something of a succès de scandale, because the 'alternate' 1964 - in which the Nazi regime survived - was pictured as not all that different from the real 1964. Once again, it seems that the poets get there first...
