For those who don't subscribe, this letter was in this morning's N-G.

In response to Israel’s recent assault on Gaza, Adam Shatz has written in the London Review of Books:“Those who invoke Israel’s right to defend itself are not troubled by (the) disparity in casualties, because the unspoken corollary is that Palestinians do not have the same right. If they dare to exercise this non-right, they must be taught a lesson.”
>
>In recent years, more Americans understand the relentless nature of Israel’s expansionist and repressive ambitions in the Palestinian territories: confiscate as much land on the West Bank with as few Palestinians as possible; isolate and impoverish Gaza at new levels while using it as a laboratory for military technology; prevent any possibility of a viable Palestinian state; and demonize Palestinian resistance as an aspect of the alleged threat of Islam, as personified by Iran.
>Moreover, as more Americans become disillusioned with American interventions in this oil-rich region, they are increasingly critical of a “special relationship” between the U.S. and Israel that promotes authoritarian regimes and opposes democracy.
>Fortunately, Americans are no longer dependent on the mainstream media and its inversion of reality. Nevertheless, as with the Palestinians, this hardly addresses the problem of organizing against powerful institutional forces that emanate from Washington and Jerusalem, and pervade our campus and community with an utter disregard for basic human rights. Until a critical mass of protest and resistance is achieved, we will continue to see the University of Illinois working hand and glove with the most violent and oppressive forces on earth.
