I'm forwarding this annoucement from Students for Justice in Palestine to say that I'm completely opposed to supporters of a just peace in the Middle East participating in such events. Quite frankly, I'm shocked by it. I would never consent to stand with those who "stand for Israel" under any circumstances, except when the deal is done. I've found the notion of "interfaith dialogue" etc. to be not only a waste of time, but horrible strategy. It sanitizes what's going on. It avoids the issue. As far as I'm concerned, this event can be seen as a Zionist tactic, and co-optation of those who support Palestinian rights.

Candlelight Vigil for Peace in Israel and Palestine

Wednesday, November 28th at 8pm

Alma Mater Plaza, Green and Wright St.

A reflective moment to gather together to honor the pain of those who have experienced violence in Israel and Palestine, and to express our hope for peace, both in the Middle East and locally. This event is not about advocating a perspective or goal, but to come together in a shared hope for better times. All are welcome.

Co-sponsored by Diversity & Social Justice Education, Cohen Center/Hillel, Interfaith in Action, Israel Illini, Students for Justice in Palestine, and University YMCA. Join the event on Facebook.
