(1) Several of us from CUCPJ and AWARE met on Sat. afternoon in the
IMC's basement family room, made a bunch of signs for the 4th of July
parade, and planned for more. We're meeting again *this evening*:

around 6PM, Sunday 6/30, in the basement Family Room of the
Independent Media Center
at Broadway and Elm, downtown Urbana.

Enter by the small set of stairs that lead down from the street
on the Elm St (north) side of the building.

We have markers, paints, posterboard, cloth for a banner, etc.

We'll probably be talking about signs and parade stuff
at tonight's AWARE meeting (5pm, White Horse bar, 6th and John St).
Also, we have our monthly demonstration next weekend, July 6th.

(2) See this film if you can - preferably this Tuesday evening, July 2nd:

*"Dirty Wars"**,* documentary following the work of journalist*Jeremy
Scahill
7:30PM Tuesday, 7/2* at the*Art Theater* in Champaign
*with discussion to follow,* led by Niloofar Shambayati

(it'll be shown at other times too, though without discussion:
        11:30am Wed 7/3; 5:00pm Thu 7/4; and 11:30am Sat 7/6)

> ... a gripping journey into the heart of America's covert wars, from
> Afghanistan to Yemen, Somalia and beyond. What begins as a report into
> a U.S. night raid gone terribly wrong in a remote corner of
> Afghanistan quickly turns into a global investigation of the secretive
> and powerful Joint Special Operations Command [...] Drawn into the
> stories and lives of the people he meets along the way, Scahill is
> forced to confront the painful consequences of a war spinning out of
> control, as well as his own role as a journalist. Dirty Wars takes
> viewers to remote corners of the globe to see first-hand wars fought
> in their name, leaving haunting questions about freedom and democracy,
> war and justice.

(3) Journalist Glenn Greenwald spoke last Friday to the Socialism 2013
conference in Chicago about what Edward Snowden has revealed on the U.S.
surveillance state, about the contagious nature of courage, about the
corruption of mainstream journalism, and other topics - a good talk.
And a great introduction by Jeremy Scahill. Watch it here:

http://wearemany.org/v/2013/06/glenn-greenwald-speaks-out

(Early on Greenwald mentions the Guardian (UK), for which he writes,
having just received one of the highest honors of world journalism.
Not a Peabody award, Pulitzer prize, ... - this is better still - he
reports that the US Army now blocks access to the Guardian web site from
all Army locations around the world. Maybe they recognize the courage
is contagious, too.)
