[Peace-discuss] [OccupyCU] FW: MASSMAIL - Research University in the World of the Future

Hi all.

These last three messages seem to have not made it
through to the Occupy listserv. I know I didn't receive them, though I did
get my first email from the list.

Maybe it didn't make it to any of you?

There was an announcement
that the Illinois email is glitchy this week, with some emails not going
through. Maybe this is a case of it?

Either way, I just wanted to be sure this reached you.

Hoping people are up for meeting.

Aimee

Please respond to this list, as it includes everyone who has replied at this point.

AWARE folk, lets meet today to get planning.

If you don't mind, Stuart, would you propose a time and location, as you seem to have an idea of others' availability?

Monday early evening isn't great for some of us - 6PM is the time of the
public meeting with the needs-assessment consultant for the Champaign
County jail system.   Brian Dolinar wrote:

Dr. Alan Kalmanoff of the Institute for Law and Public Policy (ILPP),
the consultancy hired to do a needs assessment for the county on the
jail and criminal justice system issue, will hold a public meeting at
the
Urbana Civic Center, 101 E. Water St., on April 1 at 6 p.m.

Champaign-Urbana Citizens for Peace and Justice encourages all people
from the community to attend and make your voices heard on whether you
think the county should spend more money on jail cells or suggest other
projects you think would better promote public
 safety.

Possibly after that?   Brian or anybody, do we have an idea how long this meeting might last?

(Later that evening, some of us might also want to attend Imad Al Qadi's
Q&A after the 7:30 showing of The Gate Keepers, about US-initiated
death squads in Iraq.  The film is showing all week at the Art, but
Monday's is the only Q&A session.  I don't know if
we can slip into the Q&A, which would probably be a little after 9,
without seeing the film before it.)

I'd also be up for talking about this today, Saturday.

Meanwhile, ...

Do people have ideas for signs?  I'm inclined to make one about the public good - really like your comments about that, Aimee.

Is there anything we might be able to put in print and hand to passersby?   I'd be happy to arrange to make copies if so.

Demonstration logistics: Beckman has two main entrances, on the east
side facing a circle drive on Mathews, and on the south facing the
Engineering Quad.   The auditorium is on the west end of the building,
so attendees might take either entrance.   The building's
big enough that a demo outside one entrance would be out of sight of
those entering by the other. We should think about where best to
demonstrate depending on how many of us show up to object.

That this guy was invited to speak at the great university says
something, not good. Emails should be sent to Phyllis Wise, Office of
the Chancellor, to protest his invitation.

Yep.  Great idea.  I bet other AWARE people would be interested as well.  Let's make signs and noise about the Public Good!

Dear Occupy CU and GEO,

UIUC Chancellor's final lecture of the year April 2 for "The Research
University in the World of the Future" series will feature Norman
Augustine, the retired CEO of military weapons maker Lockheed-Martin.

He will "discuss the idea that universities have to reconfigure themselves to meet the challenges of the 21st century."

As the announcement below states, Augustine believes "universities
have to become more introspective and aware that their ultimate mission
is to serve the public good." I have a feeling many of us have a very
different definition
?of "public good" than he does.

So many young people have been recruited into the military
by the poverty/lack of purpose draft. The Army has a very visible
presence in signage throughout the ARC. And the disaster capitalist
defunding of the public sphere (while
military spending has continued to soar) has only made easier
corporations' co-opting of the ideologies and values of higher
education.

I, for one, am not interested in sitting politely quiet as someone
responsible for public funds siphoning, let alone military surveillance,
warfare, and countless authorized and unauthorized drone attacks
killing civilians around the world, tells me how to
envision the future of universities I attend and might work for.

Anyone interested in organizing around this?

Hoping so.

Aimee

Dear Colleagues:

I am delighted to share with you that Norman Augustine, acclaimed
engineer and retired CEO of Lockheed Martin, will be the featured
speaker of the sixth installment of our speaker series, "The Research
University in the World of the Future." Mr. Augustine's
lecture will be held April 2 at 4:00 p.m. in the Beckman Institute
Auditorium, 405 North Matthews Avenue.

Mr. Augustine will discuss the idea that universities have to
reconfigure themselves to meet the challenges of the 21st century. He
believes universities have to become more introspective and aware that
their ultimate mission is to serve the public good. "Education
investment goes hand in hand with having a strong economy and
universities are the key to making the nation more competitive."

"The Research University in the World of the Future" series is designed
to give the campus community a multifaceted look at how higher education
is adjusting to address society's changing needs. As we envision our
campus 20 to 50 years into the future, we are
exploring how to best position the university for continued relevance
and impact.

Again, Mr. Augustine will deliver his public message at 4:00 p.m. in the
Beckman Institute Auditorium, 405 North Mathews Avenue, Urbana.

I hope you will join us.

Sincerely,

Phyllis M. Wise

Chancellor
