Dear Robert Naiman,

<http://fcnl.org/r/E/Mjk1OTk0/NzIxMDE/0/0/bmFpbWFuQGp1c3Rmb3JlaWducG9saWN5Lm9yZw/aHR0cDovL3d3dy5jYXB3aXouY29tL2Zjb25sL2lzc3Vlcy9hbGVydC8_YWxlcnRpZD02MjkyNDkwMSZ0eXBlPVRBIyEjIQ/4834/0>Last
week, members of Congress listened to their constituents. They heard
overwhelming opposition to a U.S. military strike in Syria at town hall
meetings, in email, and on the phone. And many of them—including your
representative—took action by publicly stating their opposition to the
president’s proposal to authorize the use of military force against
Syria. *Please
thank your representative.<http://fcnl.org/r/E/Mjk1OTk2/NzIxMDE/0/0/bmFpbWFuQGp1c3Rmb3JlaWducG9saWN5Lm9yZw/aHR0cDovL3d3dy5jYXB3aXouY29tL2Zjb25sL2lzc3Vlcy9hbGVydC8_YWxlcnRpZD02MjkyNDkwMSZ0eXBlPVRBIyEjIQ/4834/0>
*

Now, the U.S. and Russia have agreed on a process that could rid Syria of
all its chemical weapons by the middle of next year. Just a few weeks ago
U.S. military action seemed imminent. Now the U.S. is involved in
international, diplomatic negotiations to eliminate Syria’s chemical
weapons. The agreement could also pave the way for negotiations to stop the
carnage of Syria’s civil war.

Congressional resistance to unilateral U.S. military action in Syria helped
create the political momentum for the next steps in this process. *Please
thank your representative for opposing a U.S. military strike against Syria.
*<http://fcnl.org/r/E/Mjk1OTk3/NzIxMDE/0/0/bmFpbWFuQGp1c3Rmb3JlaWducG9saWN5Lm9yZw/aHR0cDovL3d3dy5jYXB3aXouY29tL2Zjb25sL2lzc3Vlcy9hbGVydC8_YWxlcnRpZD02MjkyNDkwMSZ0eXBlPVRBIyEjIQ/4834/0>

This progress is something to celebrate, even as we acknowledge how much
more needs to be done. Syria is still at war, and people in the country and
in refugee camps are suffering and dying every day. The diplomatic
negotiations that still lie ahead are likely to be tough.

The challenges ahead make it particularly important that you contact your
representative to say “thank you.” Your representative needs to hear that
their constituents support a nonviolent response from the U.S. *Your
representative needs to be encouraged to support international efforts
through the U.N. to eliminate chemical weapons and bring peace to Syria. *

Thank you for your emails, phone calls and visits to your members of
Congress over the past several weeks. I hope that you will continue to
follow their statements and actions and continue to remind them of the ways
that the U.S. can respond nonviolently to conflicts—sometimes long before
they become the crisis that is happening in Syria.

Sincerely,

Diane Randall
Executive Secretary
