For generations, Americans shared a tacit understanding that if you 
worked hard, a livable income and basic securities would be yours. That 
promise has been broken. Today, more than 30 million men and women in 
this country work in jobs that pay poverty wages and provide few if any 
benefits. ... In this panel, several aspects of the low-wage issue will 
be addressed: 1) myths about low-wage workers; 2) problems with 
measuring income adequacy and the history of a local living wage 
campaign; 3) current social justice efforts on behalf of low-wage 
workers, including "Fight for $15".

Robert McChesney is professor of media at University of Illinois and 
founding member of Free Press (freepress.net), a media analysis and 
advocacy group.  His recent books include Dollarocracy (with John 
Nichols), and Digital Disconnect, both of which cover the issue of money 
and media and the variety of ways corporate power has undue influence in 
the media landscape.
