In a statement the Pope sent his condolences to the diocese of the priest.

Pope Francis condemned on Sunday the murder of Mexican priest Gregorio
Lopez, who was found dead in the city of Altamirano, Guerrero, last
Thursday.

According to a statement released by the Mexican Episcopacy Conference, the
Pope sent his condolences to the diocese of Altamirano, and to the family of
the murdered priest.

The statement said that Pope Francis was deeply saddened after he received
the news that the remains of Lopez were found, and said that he was the
victim of "unjustifiable violence."

Also on Sunday, Mexican cardinal Norberto Rivera dedicated a prayer to the
priest during a mass in Mexico City's cathedral.

Since 2009 at least three priests from Altamirano diocese have been killed
by local drug gangs. The city is located in the region of Tierra Caliente,

In an interview with Mexican paper Milenio, Altamirano's bishop, Maximino
Martinez, said that the priests and church members from Altamirano will not
leave the city.

"On the contrary, this is one more challenge to prove that we have to be
where God wants. We have to carry out this mission in the best possible way.
That is why God put us here." he said.
