[Peace-discuss] Clinton & Obama being "political" - i.e., lying

[Note what’s being said here: in this case, “political” = saying something that voters want, when you don’t mean it.

In 2008, a majority of voters opposed the US wars and wanted them ended. The Democrats knew that they had been given control of Congress in 2006 to end the Mideast wars - and pretended that they were doing so, while in fact expanding them. The wars served the interests of the 1% via arms, oil & geopolitics, and were against the interests of the 99%.

Clinton and Obama knew that the public was anti-war (despite the near-universal media support for war). So they were lying when they pretended to oppose the expansion of the wars - but the lie got Obama elected. Then, of course, he expanded the wars.]

“In his new book, former defense secretary Robert Gates says both President Obama and Hillary Clinton have admitted -- to varying degrees -- that they opposed the 2007 surge in Iraq because they faced each other in the 2008 Democratic presidential primary … Gates writes the following:

“‘Hillary told the president that her opposition to the [2007] surge in Iraq had been political because she was facing him in the Iowa primary. ... The president conceded vaguely that opposition to the Iraq surge had been political. To hear the two of them making these admissions, and in front of me, was as surprising as it was dismaying.’” [WaPo]
