"The myth of human progress and the collapse of complex societies" (such as ours). Hedges expounds upon the meaning of the tale of Moby Dick and then what humans do in the face of collapse. Not all crystal clear logic but a rather spectacular learned essay on our present condition, and what so many others have said about similar situations. Something special, I think.
