I’ve listened to this program, and come to the conclusion that you all, the three participants, are agreeing with each other too much, as if everything that is said between you is unchallengeable. It is not. Especially irritating is the seeming worship of the god Chomsky, who (I think) is losing his way on important issues, especially with regard to the desirable two state solution in Israel-Palestine.  I would rather listen here to Ilan Pappe. Chomsky is doing a disservice to those trying, e.g., via BDS, to punish the Israelis as long as they oppress the Palestinians.  There is even the implication that BDS could only lead to a neoliberal result in »Palestine », as it has in S.A.  There are other facets of the remarks that are less than clear or convincing, some bordering on boilerplate in its repetitiousness, IMO. For example, as to who is wagging whose tail, U.S. or Israel; the issue is more complex than statements that the U.S. is more responsible for Israel’s actions than Israel itself, which borders on nonsense.

But withal, the program is stimulating, worthwhile, and on the whole admirable.

{INTRO}Good evening, & welcome to News from Neptune on UPTV for the 28th week of 2014. For more than twenty years, this program has been "a spontaneous & unrehearsed discussion of the news of the week and its coverage by the media" - first on a so-called "community radio station" - and, when censored and locked out of there - welcomed, I'm happy to say, by the good people at Urbana Public Television.
~ I’m Carl Estabrook; my discussants tonight are David Green & Ron Szoke.
~ Our program's name, News from Neptune, was chosen to honor Noam Chomsky, who has been talking sense about American politics for twice the quarter-century we've been on the air. Chomsky has said that in the American media, “either you repeat the same conventional doctrines everybody is saying, or else you say something true, and it will sound like it’s from Neptune.”
~ Our format is to take turns suggesting stories that have been ignored or misreported (occasionally even innocently) and then having our colleagues comment on them.
~ Today is July 11. On this day in 1980, a US-trained army murdered an El Salvadoran poet, Jaime Suarez Quemain, an anarchist. Suárez Quemain wrote

the streets of san salvador will never disremember
they know how to count their dead
the streets of san salvador will never disremember
one day they shall speak out as serene justice

That was the same US-trained & CIA-directed army that murdered Abp. Romero at mass and the six Jesuit intellectuals and two witnesses at the U. of Central America, in what Chomsky has called a US war against the church in LA, because the church spoke up for the people the US was massacring across Central America - generating the conditions that now lead to the migration of children to the US. Except from Nicaragua, which defended itself by revolution against US crimes.

~ In a self-indulgent note, I’ll mention that today is my 50th wedding anniversary. There’s a ragtime song from before WWI, that contains the lines,

“Through a field of clover we’ll ride up to Dover / on our golden wedding day!”
