Dear Robert Naiman,

It’s hard to imagine the crisis in Syria getting even worse. Already, the
civil war has claimed more than 150,000 lives. Yet, right now, some in
Congress and in the Syrian opposition are pressing the U.S. to further
escalate the conflict. They are calling on President Obama to provide
shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles, or “MANPADS,” to the Syrian
insurgents.

These weapons can be used to shoot down both military and civilian
aircraft. This transfer would further escalate the Syrian crisis, put air
travelers at risk in the Middle East and around the world and violate
international agreements that the U.S. helped put in place to control these
weapons.

Rep. Peter Welch (VT) and Rep. John Conyers (MI) are leading efforts in the
House to push back against this dangerous demand to send these weapons to
Syria.

Rep. Welch is leading a sign-on letter calling on the president not to send
these weapons. Rep. Conyers will be introducing an amendment to the
National Defense Authorization Act to make an explicit ban on the transfer
of these weapons to the armed opposition in Syria.

mobilizing support for Rep. Conyers' amendment, which could be voted on as
early as next week

to sign on to Rep. Welch’s office. But I need your help—*your
representative needs to know that constituents in your district don’t want
to see a further escalation of the war in Syria*, or further risks to air
travelers around the world.
