Hamas was founded with Israeli support during the First Initfada (1987-91) in order to try to undercut Palestinian support for Fatah - a secular political movement - by constructing an Islamicist alternative. Israel continues to trumpet the (rejected) Hamas charter that calls for the destruction of Israel.
