*FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:**UIUC* *Campus Faculty Association Hosts Forum
on Shared Governance and Academic Freedom, Wednesday February 4*
**
The Campus Faculty Association (CFA) at UIUC will host a forum entitled
“Shared Governance and Academic Freedom: Where Are We Now”.
*WHEN & WHERE:*The forum is set for Wednesday February 4, 2015 at 7:30pm
at the University YMCA, 1001 S. Wright St., Champaign.
*WHO:*The panel discussion will feature Michael Rothberg, Head of the
UIUC Department of English and John K. Wilson, the co-editor of the
influential AcademeBlog. Professor Rothberg helped author a Provost’s
report on hiring policies and procedures in the aftermath of the Steven
Salaita firing. Dr. Wilson has been following the Salaita case and other
academic freedom cases for Academe and the Illinois AAUP.
Rothberg, Wilson and the audience will discuss the report from the
standing Committee for Academic Freedom and Tenure (CAFT), the
University administration’s refusal to implement recommendations from
that report and what this means for shared governance at UIUC. Another
focus will be the likely censure of the University by the American
Association of University Professors (AAUP). Censured universities may
not claim to subscribe to the AAUP standards of academic freedom, and
may have trouble recruiting tenure-track faculty.
*More:*In the weeks since the release of the CAFT report the Campus
Faculty Association has circulated a petition calling on the
administration to implement the three corrective actions outlined by the
committee. It calls for an assessment of Professor Salaita’s
professional fitness by a faculty committee appointed by the Dean of the
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; it recommends administrators
retract their statements asserting “civility” as an employment standard.
Finally, it asks the University of Illinois to meet its financial
obligations to Professor Salaita. In a few days, more than 65 tenured
and tenure-track faculty from UIUC have signed the petition.
*About CFA*: The Campus Faculty Association advocates for administrative
transparency and the rights for tenure and non-tenure track faculty,
including fairness and equity in hiring, shared governance, and academic
freedom. CFA is dedicating to continuing the legacy of the University
of Illinois as a premiere public education institution.
