Single-Payer Supporter:

Today at 1:30PM eastern will be Peter Shumlin’s inauguration as Governor of Vermont. Over the holidays he shocked patients and advocates around the country by declaring that “now is not the time” to push forward on a single-payer healthcare system for Vermont. The Governor claimed that the plan would require an 11.5% payroll tax and an income tax as high as 9.5% for some people.

Sound fishy? It is. Shumlin’s report predicts zero administrative savings from moving to a universal system, and zero savings on prescription drugs even when the state gains the ability to negotiate drug costs for the entire population. Shumlin’s plan would only tax payroll up to $200,000 and income up to $290,000, protecting the wealthiest families in the state, while providing no relief for small businesses.

Yet even this flawed proposal would reduce healthcare costs by almost 12% and guarantee high-level coverage for every Vermonter. The Governor’s report is not an indictment of single-payer: far from it. It shows that even the worst-case scenario, ignoring the most obvious benefits of universal care, is better than the status quo.

The fate of Vermonters’ health is now in the legislature’s hands.
