This is all part of ongoing hate, smear, and intimidation campaigns against BDS and those associated with the Palestinian justice movement. (Our local target on the CM website is Francis Boyle).

While sometimes extremist lunatics can be harmless or best ignored, I don't think this is the case. I think the campaign is a seamless effort the includes the Salaita affair, Cary Nelson's monomaniacal criticism of BDS, the "Gang of Five" faculty members, and the IL state legislature's criminalization of those opposed to apartheid, lacking any clear dissent from any of its members. Phyllis Wise will continue to put the face of "civility" on all of this, and her hypocrisy regarding genuine civility will become every more apparent.

Islamophobia is relevant to all of this, but there's much more involved, politically and ideologically. Nevertheless what we are witnessing primarily is the vicious targeting of Muslim students under the guise of baseless claims that Jewish students are under threat. This insidious hatred and slander has to justify itself with accusations of anti-Semitism, but the objective reality is clear: a non-violent movement for human rights is being repressed with the worst sort of propaganda by those who justify state-sponsored violence against stateless people, and we can count on the silence of the political and administrative authorities in our community who are beholden to a power structure that favors apartheid and opposes social justice in all its aspects.

These developments should be taken seriously in the context of the racial justice movement in this country. This is the power structure doing its thing when it is the least bit threatened by the non-violent tactics that it claims to advise the oppressed to practice.
