I am wondering what the correlation of a) being a police officer and
b) committing a sexual assault is. And that, alone, is enough for me
to reject having police officers in the schools (School Resource
Officers).

Below is the story of a Champaign Police Officer who has just been
arrested for at least two sex offenses. Not with a minor. But for any
other (i.e. non-police officer) sex offender, the law says they cannot
go near schools or places where children might be.

This is the story from there:
Update: 4:30 pm

Authorities in Champaign and Piatt counties joined forces to
investigate allegations a current Champaign Police officer had
committed sexual crimes against women. 31-year old Jerad Gale, an
officer with CPD since 2013, was arrested by Illinois State Police
Tuesday afternoon.

Arrest warrants were issued in both counties with bonds of $250,000
each. Gale is accused of forcefully committing acts of sexual
penetration against two women with whom he was involved in long-term
relationships at the time of the alleged crimes.

The Piatt County case involves one felony count of criminal sexual
assault. It reportedly happened between July 4 - 28, 2012. A
conviction is punishable by 5 - 15 years in prison.

The Champaign County case involves three counts including criminal
sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual assault and aggravated
criminal domestic battery. Gale is accused of choking the victim at
one point. The incident reportedly happened November 9, 2013.
Punishment for those counts range from 3 - 7 years to 6 - 30 years.

Authorities say there is a third victim they hope to be able to
present during a trial. Formal charges in the case will not be filed
since the 2007 alleged crime falls outside the statute of limitations.
Officials say Illinois law provides evidence of sexual offenses can be
admitted to "show a defendant's propensity to commit sex offenses if
the court finds that the other offenses occurred close in time to the
charged offense and are factually similar to the charged offense."

The investigation began when the Champaign victim reported the assault
to University of Illinois Police on May 5. Shortly thereafter, the
case was turned over to the Illinois State Police.

Gale was named Champaign's 2014 Officer of the Year on March 30.
