Thank you, Karen.  Yes, it's a good letter.

The military has served as a vehicle of upward social mobility and decent
retirement income for a lot of black people, whose opportunities elsewhere
were limited.  But of course they've had to ignore the larger implications
of what they were engaged in and contributing to.  Muhammad Ali, famously,
did NOT ignore those larger implications.
