In the aftermath of the recent terror attacks on New York and
Washington there has been a great deal of discussion about the
appropriate U.S. and international response to the attacks and the
nature and dynamics of the international coalition that is being
assembled to combat terrorism. In view of the complexity of the
issues involved, the Program in South Asian and Middle Eastern
Studies in collaboration with Teachers for Peace and Justice have
organized this and other events to provide more in-depth discussion
of the issues and areas involved (their cultures, politics, and
religions), the concerns of the Arab, Muslim and South Asian
communities in the U.S., and the possible long-term implications of
the U.S. and international response on long-standing issues such as
the Arab-Israeli conflict, India-Pakistan relations, U.S. engagement
in the international scene and in the Middle East and South Asia in
particular.
