DISCUSSION TO FOLLOW

7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
South Rec Room, Allen Hall, 1005 W. Gregory, Urbana
As part of its ongoing efforts to promote awareness and discussion of
issues surrounding the terror attacks of September 11th and the
military strikes in Afghanistan, Teachers for Peace and Justice
presents this documentary film on the effects of 11 years of U.S.-led
sanctions on Iraq. In a speech broadcast this past Sunday, October
7th (transcript printed in the 10/8 New York Times), Osama bin Laden
cited the "children...dying at this time...killed in Iraq without any
guilt" as emblems of the "hypocrisy" of the U.S. and its allies.
While no rationale or agenda can possibly justify the September 11th
attacks or the threat of others like it, now more than ever it is
important to be informed about U.S. and international policies
regarding Iraq.
Originally aired on British television in March 2000, the 73-minute
documentary features interviews with Denis Haliday, who resigned as
administrator of the U.N.'s "Oil for Food" program, and his
successor, Hans von Sponeck, as well as U.S. Department of State and
U.N. officials. A 1999 Unicef report calculated that more than half a
million children had died as a direct result of sanctions. The film's
title is inspired by then Secretary of State Madelaine Albright's
response when asked whether the death of 500,000 children was
justified: "I think this is a very hard choice, but the price-we
think the price is worth it."
