This is an incomplete, compiled list of peace-related events from now 'til
the end of the month. I'll also post to the IMC events calendar any of
these that aren't already there.

I'd like to suggest that we use the IMC calendar, plus this list, to post
any peace-related events we know about. I'd also like to suggest that the
aware website organizers create a separate calendar specifically for peace
events on the aware site, perhaps by checking the imc calendar and the
peace list every couple of days for potential updates. That way we can
have the benefits of a IMC calendar we can post directly to - which lists
both peace-related and other community events - plus the benefits of an
AWARE-specific calendar with exclusively peace-related events.

Tuesday, Oct. 23
"The War on Terrorism: Long-Term Issues and Implications." Panel
discussion sponsored by the UIUC Program in South Asian and Middle Eastern
Studies, with B. Arfi, H. Esfahani, J. Nassar, C. Singer, & C. Kuno. 7-9
p.m., 228 Natural History Bldg., 1301 W. Green, Urbana.
(note: I think Meredith Kruse is also giving a talk on US
"anti-terrorist" intervention in Colombia on this date - details,
anyone?)

Wednesday, Oct. 24
Carl Estabrook, noon. Estabrook will be giving a talk/leading
discussion at the "Cerebral Cafe" in the Illini Union, Wednesday, October
24 at noon. The topic is "Mr. Bush's War: How to Stop the US from Killing
More."
(note: there may also be a celebration of Kofi Annan and the UN at the
Newman Center on this date (or possibly a different date soon) - details,
anyone?)

Friday, Oct. 26
Robert McChesney, noon, University YMCA, Wright & Chalmers Sts.,
Champaign. "The Role of the Media in Sustaining Conscience and
Compassion." (Friday Forum program; broadcast Mon., Oct. 29 at 6 pm on
WEFT 90.1 FM, Champaign)
Workers Rights in Bangladesh. 3:00 PM, ISU Quad, Bloomington IL.

Sunday, Oct. 28
AWARE weekly organizational meeting, 6-8pm, University YMCA,
Wright and Chalmers Sts., Champaign.
(note: there's also a talk at noon at Channing-Murray on "growing
up Muslim" - details, anyone?)

Tuesday, Oct. 30
PRC Rally to Oppose Military Retaliation. Noon - 1:00 PM. UI Union
South Patio, UIUC. Sponsored by the Progressive Resource/Action
Cooperative.

Daily/Ongoing events
Ladies Against War. Daily except Thursday, 12-1pm outside Urbana
Post Office.
Ladies and Laddies Against War. Thursdays 12-1pm at Prospect &
I-74 overpass, Champaign.

----
That's all I've got wind of so far. If anyone knows of other events for
this month or next, please post them onto the IMC calendar (www.ucimc.org,
and click on the 'events' link near top of page ... or directly at
http://www.ucimc.org/calendar/?display=list&days=14), and into other
formats as well. I've got most of these on a half-page sheet to leave at
coffee shops, libraries, etc. around town this week - I'll have copies at
this afternoon's media group session (4 pm at Cafe Paradiso on Lincoln).
It might also be good to write up a
combined blurb for WEFT announcements. Of course, we need to be clear that
most of these events aren't sponsored by AWARE, but that shouldn't stop us
from performing the community service of bringing them to public
attention.
