Vieques is present at the World Conference of Pacifists in Ireland

The call for peace and the struggle of the people of Vieques was present at 
the War Resister International Convention (WRI).  The WRI is a pacifist 
organization with headquarters in London that celebrated its tri-anual 
conference in Dublin, Ireland from August 3 to 9, 2002.  The theme of the 
conference is non violent resistance and social change.

The delegation of Puerto Rico was composed by attorneys Fermín L. Arraiza and 
José Juan Nazario, Dr. Luis Nieves Falcon and Dr. Áurea Rodríguez.  Las 
Monday they present a paper on the struggle of the people of Vieques to stop 
the US Navy maneuvers and showed a documentary film on Vieques by William 
Nemcik.

The group met and exchanged views with 1976 Noble Peace Laureate Maired 
Corrigan Maguire of the Peace Movement in Northern Ireland.  She expressed 
her support and her desire to help in obtaining peace for Vieques "The Girl 
Island."  The Puerto Rican delegation counted on the support of 
researcher/writer Matt Meyer and peace activist Meg Starr.  Both are 
distinguished peace activist affiliated with the WRI in the United States.

Conference participants pledged to develop civil disobedience actions in 
their respective countries and to publicize information on human rights 
violations by the United States in Puerto Rico. They pledged to publicize the 
report of the International Investigative Commission on the human rights 
violations of Puerto Rican civil disobedients on the part of the US Federal 
Court, US Federal Marshals and the military police.  The verdict of the 
International Tribunal that took place in San Juan and Vieques and which 
condemned the violations of human rights by the government of the US in 
Vieques and on the main island of Puerto Rico was also circulated.
