AWARE minutes (except for the minutes when I fell asleep) for 12-29-02

Meredith Kruse, moderating

1. Introductions

2. News of the Week (Carl)
	a. Iraq allows weapons inspectors in, and the US threatens to attack;  
N. Korea kicks weapons inspectors out 	and the US resorts to diplomacy.
	
	b. Saudia Arabia will allow US to use airspace during the war; more US  
troops and weapons of mass 	destruction are being moved to the Persian  
Gulf.

	c. US torture tactics make the news

	d. Most South Koreans feel the US poses more of a threat to their  
security than does North Korea

	e. Rumsfeld boasts he can fight two wars at the same time. Rumor has  
it he can also pat his head and rub his 	stomach simultaneously.

	f. More unemployed lose their benefits, the White House gives more  
money to rich people, and polls show 	Bush approval rating at all-time  
low

	g. Israeli government claims Saddam may be hiding weapons in Syria

	h. FBI trying to get personal information on all foreign students and  
faculty on university campuses

3. Events of the Past Week
	a. Speaker from local mosque talked to AWARE about INS activities,  
concerns about the safety of local 	Muslim students. Can the university  
serves as a protective buffer between the INS and students? AWARE  
	trying to set up a meeting with the chancellor and department heads to  
address this possibility.

	b. Protest on Prospect: 16 people this week, including some new faces,  
and some colorful interactions with 	passersby. The issue of passing  
out literature remains unresolved.

4. Working Group Reports
	a. MLK: Working Group Meeting this Thursday, Jan 2, 7 pm at Carol's  
house.

	b. DC trip: 5 vans reserved, group will be staying overnight at a  
local church, $800 in donations received to 	help those who want to go  
but can't afford it. Contact Charlotte Green

	c. Day of War Event: Meet in West-side Park, corner of State and  
University at 5 pm on the day war begins. If 	war begins after 7 pm,  
meet the following evening.

	d. MLK group is doing a mailing to local churches. This will have a  
letter detailing MLK stuff, DC trip, and day-	of-war event

	e. speaking groups. Jeff Guntzel and Greg Palast. No new info at this  
time.

	f. City council resolution. No new info. Still need a text.

	g. Literature group: Marta and Ricky are doing literature. David Green  
made a new flyer about the 	connections between US policy in Israel and  
Iraq.

	h. Treasurer report: about $3500 in general fund and $800 for DC rally.

5. Announcements
	a. Library display coming down
	b. New Years Eve party at Al Kagan's, 9 pm
