Independent Media Center
In-Residence at Unit One/Allen Hall 2/25-3/1

Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center is a grassroots collective that
provides a forum for community members to voice issues, ideas, and opinions
that are under-represented in the dominant media. The IMC offers tools,
training, and support for the production and distribution of these
under-represented perspectives. Since its inception, the IMC has produced
hundreds of news pieces in print, audio, and video for its local website
(urbana.indymedia.org), the Public I, and many local news venues. The IMC has a
storefront space in downtown Urbana which houses media production facilities, a
newsstand, a library and media archive, meeting facilities, a concert venue,
and an art gallery. Their motto is “Become the Media.”

Monday, February 25
5:00pm – dinner discussion: The Role of Alternative and Indy Media (in the
Allen Private Dining Room)
8:00pm – Opening Program: Birth of a Revolution: An Intro to the Indymedia
Movement
10:00pm – Informal Discussion with IMC members (in the guest apartment)

Tuesday, February 26
7:00pm – Counteracting the Coercive Power of Corporate Media
9:00pm – workshop: Intro to Radio News – learn how to produce your own show
10:00pm – Informal radio work time, other discussion (in the guest apartment)–
come hang out or learn how to use the production equipment

Wednesday, February 27
5:00pm – dinner discussion: Advantages and Problems of Citizen Journalism (in
the Allen Private Dining Room)
7:00pm – Making and Distributing Grassroots Indy Media
9:00pm – workshop: The Technology Behind Indymedia: Or, Using the Master’s
Tools
10:00pm – Informal radio work time, other discussion (in the guest apartment)

Thursday, February 28
5:00pm – dinner discussion: How to Find Resources Outside the Mainstream (in
the Allen Private Dining Room)
7:00pm – Information Activism
9:00pm – The Challenges of Indy Investigative Journalism
10:00pm – Informal radio work time, other discussion (in the guest apartment)

All programs are open to the public and take place in the South Rec Room of
Allen Hall, 1005 W. Gregory, Urbana, unless noted otherwise. Call 333-8351 for
