I am not happy with the response I
received from this reporter regarding the story and her idea of a fair
report. Thankfully we have indy media to post what needs to be
reported. I guess this is another example of "Rich
Media....Poor Democracy". I only wish she would
read Robert McChesney's book on the subject!

Protests Bush
I was
sent to cover the speech and people watching it, and felt I was lucky to catch
your daughter before she left. Certainly the point wasn't to make it look as if
you were the only ones outside, and if that's how you read it, I'm sorry.
When
you consider that thousands were in the armory, I think you can understand why
the rally itself took the lead position. As far as the
photos go, I don't have control over what is used or where it is placed. Same
with the headlines. As for an expanded local story, I would suggest calling
or e-mailing the editors of the Mattoon paper to see if they would be up for
that.
Thanks
for the feedback.

Amy:
We are not sure what to make of this
story (listed below) that you filed with the Mattoon paper Monday November
4, 2002. I guess the mainstream media has its own agenda and bias.
The story is about our family and apparently you never really took the time to
interview all of us, even though the story seems to lead the readers to that
impression. We are also interested in the fact that the head line reads
Local family travels to protest Bush's speech. Had
you talked to each us you would have found out that we were there to call for
Peace and for our government not to attack Iraq. But
since you only printed sound bites, that was not stated. Why does the
article lead the readers to think that we and 2 young men (who were ejected)
were the only protesters present? I saw at least 150-200 other people
there besides the 5 you mentioned in this story. We feel better reporting
could have made for a better article. The vast majority of the story was
not about the headline and us.....but seemed to be an ad for republican
candidates. The front page of our local paper carried picture of the rally
inside...Why was there no picture on page 3A of the activities outside the
Armory? The headlines certainly drew attention to the fact that something
else may have happened in Springfield on Sunday. We are not sure what the
purpose of this story was...but the coverage of an important event that drew
supporters of the peace movement, Democrats, labor and various other people
should be given a more unbiased report. We are thankful for the
growing independent media movement and look to that venue for the most accurate
report of the days events. You may want to look at one of the reports
posted online: http://www.ucimc.org by
an eye witness (Dan Chambers) who was there and saw the same event you
covered. Please respond and let us know if you are willing to write a
fuller and more fair story about the events you "covered" on Sunday November 3,
2002.
The following message was sent to a list
serve to share media coverage of events in Springfield on 11/03/02:
I am not sure if this is the news
coverage we had hoped for. A Decatur News reporter filed this story
in the Mattoon paper this morning. (page A3). Scan down to the story
about:
Local family travel to
protest Bush's speech. She somehow missed the main points and
the fact that there were about 150-200 people there besides our family! I
am glad to report that the 2 tickets to enter the event we chose not to
use were apparently put to good use by the 2 brave young men who went in,
in our place!
