Aware Minutes October 27, 2002

I PROGRESSIVE RESOURCE COOPERATIVE- Jen Tayabji

           Expressed desire willingness to work with AWARE.  Distributed 
anti Chief Illiniwek pamphlet and statement against imminent war in Iraq. 
Passed out flyers announcing upcoming events .....

Anti- racism- working to “kick” Chief Illiniwek out of campus since 1989

November 12 -Community Forum to get a resolution to Board of Trustees to ban 
the Chief for the meetings from Nov 13-14. Could use some supporters at the 
Forum

Attack on Iraq:

Implications for Peace and Justice in the Middle East
Panelists: Roaa Al Heeti( UI student Activist), Joe Miller (Vietnam Vets 
Against the War) Danielle Hargis (Democratic Solidarity Committee)
Kenneth Cuno (Director, UI South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies)
Saturday November 2, 2PM at IDF (corner of Springfield and Wright)



II News of The Week- Carl Estabrook
    - War in Iraq may be slated for January or February
    _ Friday two criminals captured in DC Metro Area but more remain at 
large.
-Bloody War in Chechnya(sp?)
-Scuffles between CIA and Rumsfeld
_Washington Post article reports 5 instances where Bush Administration lied 
about War in Iraq.

III Activities of Past Week
     -Palestinian Truth Tour- Friday at 7PM -very powerful-Good turnout, 
including people from Muslim student association and other arabs were there. 
        -Carol Innskeep was the facilitator.

-news today 2 Sr. Citizens, internationals, were beaten on Sunday
     -1st ever Danville Peace March (Saturday?)


IV Coming Events

-Protest on Prospect- about 50 people. Pretty Positive.
There are Anti-Hate Speech Laws to protect us should people shout hateful 
things.
-Will happen every Sat 2-4 PM

More Than 100,000 people marched in DC and San Francisco
10,000 St. Paul Minnesota 50,000 Rome, Italy

Postcards for Peace- November 10th Fundraiser-Sandra Ahten!

Parent a Postcard-$65.00 you ge 50 postcards and 200 sold at the fundraiser

Many interesting and artful postcards were displayed
-voting on 5 postcards each for Christmas and Political packages

-Framing Monday and Wednesday Night
-Auctioneer needed

-Farmer’s Market Table- Stop by and help raise money and interest in the 
movement.

Teachers for Peace and Justice-table and picnic on Quad this Wednesday 12-2 
PM AWARE will co-sponsor Teach-in mid November.

12 noon, Tuesday, 29 Oct at YMCA, Mary Mallory will speak about The Patriot 
Act, effect on making information inaccesible to the public-destroyed, 
withdrawn or websites scrubbed.

-November 9 IDF fundraiser volunteers needed to cook and help prepare the 
Friday night before and Saturday

YMCA debate by congressional candidates on environment and Labor

Monday 7pm Greg Hall local candidates to answer questions on local issues
