>University of Illinois Teach-In on the World Bank and IMF
>
>
>On September 16, 2002, three prominent activists from Nigeria,
>Mexico, and the Philippines will speak at a Teach-In on the World
>Bank and IMF. Coming just two weeks prior to the annual World
>Bank/IMF meetings in Washington, DC, the UI Teach-In hopes to open
>up a public discussion on these powerful, yet little understood,
>international finance institutions. Dozens of Teach-Ins are
>occurring throughout the world in anticipation of the upcoming
>closed World Bank/IMF meetings.
>The first speaker, Onesimo Hildago is co-director of the
>Chiapas-based Center for Economic Research and Social Action, an
>organization that focuses on military repression and IMF/World Bank
>neoliberal policies, and the effects on the peoples of Chiapas,
>Mexico. Our second speaker is Asume Osuoka, who works with
>Environmental Rights Action, a Nigerian-based human rights advocacy
>group active in the struggle for democracy and against the violence
>propagated by the oil and mining companies, and supportive policies
>by the World Bank and IMF. The third speaker is Chie Abad, former
>garment worker who for twelve years made clothes for GAP on the
>island of Saipan. She attempted to organize a garment worker union,
>was threatened by her employers, and now is spokesperson for an
>international group suing for better conditions for these garment
>workers. All three speakers will address the critical issues of
>just and sustainable development, North-South relations, and the
>quest for alternatives to the undemocratic World Bank and IMF.
>The Teach-In will be an excellent opportunity for students to hear
>from people active in the struggle for social and economic justice
>around the world. Our venue will be Foellinger Hall (on the quad),
>7pm, Monday 16th September. Your participation and sponsorship
>would be greatly appreciated. Contributions from units and
>departments to help offset transport costs are much needed. Please
