I say we endorse it unless someone raises a serious objection (and I can't
imagine what it might be).

Subject: [Peace] request for AWARE to co-sponsor Palestinian Speaker
Date: Tue, 10 Sep 2002 23:13:23 -0500

Hi all-
I sent this request out last week, we were going to discuss it at the
AWARE meeting last Sunday but we were a bit frazzeled after the teach-in
and forgot to decide on this. So, I would like to invite AWARE again to
co-sponsor the event below, no money required, just help in getting the
word out. AWARE will be put on the flyer, and mentioned at the talk.
I need to know by tomorrow at 5pm. If there seems to be a consensus
on email by then I'll take that as endorsement.

This event is very much in line with AWARE's stated principles and goals.

Let me know, Meridith

Dear Friends,

The Illinois Disciples Foundation would like to invite your organization to
co-sponsor a upcoming talk by Palestinian Activist Osama Saba entitled, "The
Occupation is Killing Us All". This event will occur on Monday September
23rd from 7-9pm in Wisegarver Lounge at the Illinois Disciples Foundation.

Osama Saba was born in Jerusalem to Palestinian parents and lived in
Ramallah on the West Bank where his family still lives. He left to Egypt in
1987 for college and after obtaining his bachelor's degree from the
University of Cairo he worked there for two years. After college he returned
to Palestine where he worked for two years with the Palestinian ministry of
health. In 1996 he came to University of Iowa as a Fulbright scholar and is
currently at this University completing his Ph.D. He participated in the
Iowa International Fellow program and is a member and the president of the
Palestinian student organization on campus. Osama has spoke at a number of
events on and off campus including the "Christian Witness For Middle East
Peace and Justice" event sponsored by Middle East Forum and Friends of
Sabeel-NA (Iowa chapters) held in both Des Moines and Iowa City.

On September 23rd Osama will discuss the history of the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict, share personal accounts of daily life for Palestinans living in
the West Bank, and discuss the challenges that must be met for there to be
lasting peace in the Middle East. The final hour of his presentation will
be devoted to a question and answer discusssion with audience members.

Additionally at this September 23rd event a statement of support will be
read from Not in My Name on behalf of Champaign resident David Green. Not
in My Name is a Jewish peace group that was formed in November 2000 to work
for a just and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians. As an
organization Not in My Name has declared, "We believe that the first step
toward attaining peace must be for Israel to end its occupation of the West
Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem. We call ourselves "Not In My Name"
because we feel that the State of Israel often claims to act in the name and
interests of world Jewry, but that these actions do not reflect our Jewish
values and beliefs We do not believe that the conflict is a religious one,
so we do not believe that the fact that we are Jews should in any way
prevent or discourage us from working with Palestinians, whether they are
Muslim or Christian, religious or secular."

Organizations that co-sponsor this event will have their names listed on
publicity and be asked to help spread the word to their membership and
allies (fliers and email announcement about the event will be made available
to co-sponsoring organizations) . Further, representatives of all
co-sponsoring organizations are invited to come at 6:30pm on Monday Sept.
23rd to display literature on tables that will be available in Wisegarver
Lounge throughout the duration of Osama's talk.

The Illinois Disciples Foundation hopes you will co-sponsor this event. To
do so please call Meridith at 217- 352-8721 or email her at bmmk at soltec.net
no later than Tuesday September 10th.

In Peace and Solidarity,

Meridith Kruse

Director, Illinois Disciples Foundation
