[Dr Syeda Saiyidain Hameed is a scholar, biographer, and translator.  She is also a founding member of India's Muslim Women's Forum, of Women's Initiative for Peace in South Asia (WIPSA), of South Asians for Human Rights (SAHR), and of the Centre for Dialogue and Reconciliation (CDR), New Delhi. From 1997 to 2000 she was a Member of the National Commission for Women, a statutory body created to examine the working of the safe-uards provided to women under the Constitution of India. She obtained her PhD from the University of Alberta, taught at that university and at Lady Shri Ram College, University of Delhi, and has published studies on Sufism and recent subcontinental figures, including Abul Kalam Azad and Zakir Husain. Her 'Voice of the Voiceless: Status of Muslim Women in India' was published in March 2000, and her translation in English verse of th! e Mussaddas of Maulana Altaf Husain Hali is due in December.
