AWARE Meeting 1/26
Facilitated by Lisa Chason, Minutes by DrDa

- Introductions

- Presentation by Sascha Meinrath about the IMC:
Two new initiatives: (1) Capital campaign (2) membership drive (250 members
by July 4, 2003). Monthly costs: about $1500 (rent, utilities) Monthly
income: $1200 (performances, memberships, sustainers) = IMC needs to expand
income $ources.
Comments about value of IMC in the community, questions about IMC buying new
building, allocation of funds. AWARE has already made $500 contribution.
Proposal by Lisa about forming a working group to help enlist new members
(we’ll let that idea germinate).

- Short video presentation about City Council Resolution to prevent war
against Iraq. Lots of gratuitous war footage.

- News of the Week:
Carl is absent. Ricky mentions articles in Dollars and Sense magazine about
rehash of Kuwaiti incubator story, others. State of the Union address this
coming Tuesday. Recommendation of World Socialist website (wsws.org).
Disproval of Iraqi cannisters used for uranium. Germany and France oppose US
and NATO.

- Past weeks events:
DC protests went smoothly, thanks to Charlotte. Report by Jeff Sowers. Media
coverage disappointing, but overall has increased awareness of anti-war
movement. February 15 is next international gathering.
Peter on somewhat qualified success of MLK weekend, endorsement of AWARE by
McKinley Foundation.
Meeting with Rep. Tim Johnson which nobody from AWARE attended.
Baring Witness for Peace to hit the media soon.

- Upcoming Events:
Ricky: Let’s brainstorm on Anti-Racism aspect of AWARE, outreach (this will
be a working group).
Adrienne: Announcement of CO meeting on Feb. 2, request for involvement.
Need for flyers.
Robert: Alternative Education Event on Jan 29 at Lincoln Hall. Flyers to be
passed around.
Upcoming Fitzgerald town meeting: AWARE should have anti-war presence.
Meredith on 2-day Nonviolence training, Feb 24 (?) at Channing Murray.
Danielle: Constituent meeting for input on bike trails.
Rebecca: Exhibition and Soirée at High Cross Studios of 40 North and Cicada
(arts collectives).

- Request of Sponsorship:
Jessica and Jesus on Guatemala, Monday Feb 17. Money to go to Human Rights
Action.
It is agreed that AWARE will contribute $50.

- Announcements:
Jeff on lawn signs: Of the 100 double-sided signs, most are already gone.
More signs? Jeff will order 250 more. Danielle suggests yard sign hotline.
Carol on AWARE listserve: Too much email. Suggestion of new listserve for
Peace News. If overwhelmed, sign up for Digest, which groups and outlines
emails. Shouldn’t notices requiring action should reach as many people as
possible? Discussion will be tabled until next week.

- Working group reports:
Ricky on Prospect for Peace: 82 people, protest still going well. AWARE has
authorization to pass out leaflets on passenger side of right lane. Jeff
passes around bumper stickers to be distributed at protests.
Finance report: AWARE has $3800, minus money for DC vans ($1000).

- Upcoming Events
Day of War Rally in Westside Park: 5-9pm if war begins before 5, next day if
after 5pm?
Decision on exact time will happen after the meeting.
PRAC Rally at noon on day after war. Brooke will talk to Ricky about sharing
phone lists between AWARE and PRAC. AWARE will co-sponsor the event.

Final Presentation: Danielle about Anti-War Resolution at City Council
Meeting on Monday night, 7:30, 400 S. Vine. Resolution passed around, as
well as letter by Chicago Alderman responding to claim that an anti-war
resolution has no local import. Danielle has not heard from anyone opposing
the resolution. Suggestion to come early (7:15), speakers given 5 minutes
each. Monday’s vote is "litmus" vote, following Monday is "binding" vote.
Danielle thinks 4 members will vote YES, 1 NO, and 2 undecided. Strategy to
practice speaking, delivering coherent message, enlisting media
spokespersons, press release. This will be a working group.

Working Groups group…
