AWARE's Second Annual July 4th Persistent Parade
Presence Planning Pow-wow (PPPPP)

Minutes 5/21/03

Attendance: Janet Wesse, Mike Simon, Sharon Couervie,
Randall Cotton, Ricky Baldwin

Note: The theme of this year's parade is "EDUCATION:
CORNERSTONE OF FREEDOM"

BRAINSTORMING (grouped by theme, not chronology)—

Visual image will be important – something simple and
clear
Participation is important, draw people together to
work on float/ props & join parade
Publicize AWARE – contact info, etc.
A sit-in to stop the parade
People dressed as shriners, dunce caps instead of
fezzes
Paul King in uniform/ someone in a Bush mask

THEME:  EDUCATION NOT INCARCERATION

THEME:  NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND  - big sign, followed by
children goose-stepping/ saluting/ running to catch up
Educational leaflets (on 'No Child Left Behind' in
violation of parade rules)

THEME:  THE EDUCATION YOU AREN'T GETTING (e.g. A
People's History of the United States - Howard Zinn)
A call to the highest ideals of education, using
national pride/ national history/ 1776
IMAGE: giant puppets of Founding Fathers Thomas Paine,
Ben Franklin et al with revealing info/ quotes… WHAT
YOU WEREN'T TAUGHT IN SCHOOL …  followed by a big
banner with USA PATRIOT Act info … also:  DISSENT IS
PATRIOTIC
Basics of education in civil rights, etc.
THEME:  EDUCATE YOURSELF – how to tune in to Democracy
Now, IMC, etc.
THEME:  Where a good education can lead/ What's
possible with a real education
e.g. Iraqi/ Palestinian kids want to go to school
THEME: WHAT IS MORE POWERFUL THAN A QUESTION?
Ask different questions, e.g. Where are the WMDs?
Where is Osama bin Laden?  Where is W's brain?  Are
your kids getting what they need?  What is the role of
imagination?
Incorporate the emotional in education

Education cuts
