Unit One Documentary Film Series
Amandla! A Revolution in Four Part Harmony
Wednesday, February 4, 7:00pm, South Rec Room

“There's no inch of this movie that's boring. It's thrilling stuff.” Richard Roeper

“4 stars” Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune

The power of song to communicate, motivate, console, unite and, ultimately, beget change: that ideal, gloriously realized, lies at the heart of director Lee Hirsch's inspiring feature film documentary. Winner of the Audience Award and Freedom of Expression Award at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival.

The Cruise

Tuesday, February 17, 7:00pm, South Rec Room

The Emmy award winning documentary about our upcoming Guest-in-Residence Timothy “Speed” Levitch, “the loquacious New York City tour bus guide, sidewalk philosopher and one-man almanac of urban lore.” (New York Times) “It is not, unlike most documentaries, about a noteworthy life or a momentous event or a consequential institutional situation, it's about an obscure, fringe-dwelling bohemian and his romantically cosmic point of view, his robust wolf-howling celebration of the pleasures that can be drawn from the aspects of existence most of us blithely walk by every single day. Levitch is a subject compelling enough to remind us of the ecstatic joy that can come from the simple act of walking through a door, for no other reason than to see what's on the other side.” (Film Journal International)
Weather Underground – Co-director Bill Siegel will appear for audience discussion.
Thursday, March 4, 7:00pm, Main Lounge

“A terrific movie, energetic and articulate. It¹s the don’t miss documentary

of the season.” David Sterritt, Christian Science Monitor

“A terrifically smart and solid piece of filmmaking.” Elvis Mitchell, The New York Times

Nominated for a 2003 Academy Award for Best Documentary!

The Weather Underground re-examines the history of the infamous radical organization whose goal was the violent overthrow of the United States government. This group of several hundred young, white, and mostly middle-class, militants battled police in the streets, broke Timothy Leary out of prison and were responsible for over two dozen bombings including the US Capital. Evading one of the largest manhunts in US history, they lived underground for nearly a decade.

 War Photographer

Wednesday, March 31, 7:00pm, South Rec Room

“4 stars… Strikingly original… Indelible images and brilliant use of unconventional music make this a nonfiction film that must be seen – and heard – to be believed.” Christian Science Monitor

The Oscar-nominated documentary film War Photographer is a harrowing journey into the world of renowned photojournalist James Nachtwey. War Photographer heroically grapples with the moral responsibility of journalists who make a living documenting other peoples' pain.

Hell House

Tuesday, April 13, 7:00pm, South Rec Room

“This fascinating, low-profile documentary takes viewers inside a Texas Fundamentalist church that works to save souls and win converts by staging an annual Halloween fright show -- complete with scenes of abortions, AIDS deaths, date rapes, and teen suicides.” Boston Globe
