Proposed Nuclear Reactor at Clinton
Informational Meeting
Sunday, April 10

An informational meeting regarding a proposed second
nuclear reactor at Clinton will be held on Sunday,
April 10, 2005 at 2 PM at Civitas, 112 W. Main,
Urbana. (Civitas is a couple of buildings east of the
Cinema Art Gallery.) Ralph Dring of No New Nukes in
Bloomington will speak on the effects of radiation
from nuclear power plants on health the relationship
between nuclear power and nuclear weapons. George
Gore of the Sierra Club in Champaign-Urbana will talk
about the risks of terrorism, financing/economics, and
energy alternatives. Information will also be
available about registering to speak at the Nuclear
Regulatory Commission’s hearing on April 19 in Clinton
and about other means of public input.

Exelon, the company which owns the nuclear power plant
at Clinton, has applied for a site permit to build a
second nuclear reactor at that location. The Nuclear
Regulatory Commission (NRC) has issued a draft
environmental impact statement, which recommends that
the permit be granted. The NRC is holding a hearing on
Tuesday, April 19, 7-10 PM, at the Clinton Junior High
School, 401 N. Center St. (Center St. Is part of Bus.
Hwy 51 on the north side of town.) Please note that
the location of the meeting has been changed from the
library because of the limited seating there. Public
comments will be limited to three minutes per person.

Residents from Champaign-Urbana are needed to attend
the NRC hearing on April 19 and to speak out against
the proposed second nuclear reactor. Champaign-Urbana
is downwind from Clinton and would be affected by
radiation from the plant should an accident occur.
Our community is already affected by the “permitted”
radiation from the first nuclear plant, currently in
operation.
