AWARE minutes for 5/10/05

Carol Inskeep facilitating, 19 in attendance.

News of the Week (Carl Estabrook)

Introductions

New Ideas

- Students for Environmental Concerns will post more info on their upcoming
Environmental Justice events, in order for AWARE to decide whether or not to
cosponsor.

- Food Not Bombs Cosponsorship Request. No objections. Picnic is April 17th at
Scott Park.

- POW/MIA- David Green asks if anyone else is interested in working to get the
Savoy Post Office to take down their POW/MIA flag. A discussion ensues,
because Mort thinks this is no longer an important issue, but Danielle says it
seems to be reemerging, although she and several others in the group do not
understand the significance of the issue. David encourages anyone who does not
know why POW/MIA is considered harmful propaganda to research it online and
consider future action.

- Eric Anglada, from the Catholic Worker House, let us know he and anyone who
shows up to help will be flyering outside the post office on Friday to
encourage people to resist war taxes. For more information, email Eric at
pax48 at excite.com.

Reports

School’s guidance counselor in order to get anti-recruitment table at Career Day
and anywhere else recruitment takes place at the school.

- AWARE presents @ the Urbana Free Library- AWARE will be using the auditorium
at the library once a month to have events, to be determined by the working
group. To join the working group, email Carol at carolinskeep at yahoo.com. More

- P4P / Main Event Protests (Ricky)- on the 3rd Saturday of each month, AWARE
will now be holding a protest from 2 to 4 at One Main in downtown Champaign in
order to reach a new audience.

- Farmer’s Market- Jan, Durl and others have ordered merchandise for the table,
and Linda is checking into how to register. Someone will contact the ACLU to
get some Patriot Act and other literature.

- Wheels of Justice (David / Mort)- the Thursday April 28 keynote will take
place at the University Y free of charge. If you would like to help get more
cosponsors and with publicity, contact David at davegreen48 at yahoo.com. He

-Ebert Fest- Rich has contact Roger Ebert to try to get him to speak out against
the war during the film fest. Carol and Matt are putting together an Overlooked
Media handout.

-CU Citizens for Peace and Justice (Danielle)- the Urbana Human Rights
Commission is planning a series of educational events about felony
disenfranchisement. The County Board has allocated money to do a disparities
study regarding county business contracts and hiring, but has now sent the

April 21 County Board meeting to demand that the study be done.
