Are folks interested in this?
Randall has attended a past UFPJ assembly. I'll be going later this
month to one in St. Louis (and would welcome someone else coming
along). AWARE is an official member. mkb

> Dear UFPJ member organizations and assembly delegates,
>
>
>
> As you know, between National Assemblies, UFPJ is directed by a
> Steering Committee (SC) elected from the membership. One of the most
> important tasks of the upcoming Assembly in St. Louis is to elect a
> new Steering Committee.
>
>
>
> We are now officially soliciting nominations of member organizations
> to serve on the SC. Any group can run: a national organization, a
> local group, or a local affiliate (or branch, chapter, or office) of a
> national organization.
>
>
>
> Our current "Structure and Functioning of United for Peace and
> Justice" guidelines, passed at the last Assembly, mandate a Steering
> Committee of 35 organizations (21 local, 14 national). You will
> shortly receive proposed amendments which would expand the SC to 20
> national and 20 local seats. These revisions will be discussed and
> voted up or down at the Assembly before the vote on the SC.
>
>
>
> What we need now is for groups to run. Go to
> http://www.unitedforpeace.org/article.php?id=1873 to acquaint yourself
> with the current Steering Committee and to
> http://www.unitedforpeace.org/article.php?id=1873 to learn about how
> it operates.
>
>
>
> We are actively seeking groups that work among key constituencies, are
> making important contributions to the peace and justice movement,
> and/or represent major city coalitions and rural areas. It is also a
> top priority of UFPJ to maintain a leadership body in which at least
> fifty percent are people of color, at least fifty percent are women,
> at least twenty percent are youth and students, and at least fifteen
> percent are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transsexual.
>
>
>
> If you are prepared to run someone from your organization for the SC,
> please download the nomination form at
> http://www.unitedforpeace.org/downloads/SC_Nom_form_2005.rtf , fill it
> out, and email it to both hanykhalil at igc.org and
> greenelent at earthlink.net no later than Wednesday, February 16, 5pm
> EST.
>
>
>
> (February 16 is NOT an absolute deadline for submitting SC
> nominations, but you’ll make it much easier for the people
> coordinating the election if you send it in by the 16th! The final
> deadline for submitting a nomination is 12 noon, Sunday, February 21.
> You can bring a filled out form to the assembly, or fill it out
> there.)
>
>
>
> If you are considering running, and want to know more about what is
> involved, give Judith LeBlanc (Judith at unitedforpeace.org) or Hany
> Khalil (hanykhalil at igc.org) a call in the National Office
> (212-868-5545).

>
> One of the strengths of the last Assembly was that so many groups
> participated in this democratic process, giving the delegates a real
> choice. We hope we will repeat that experience. If you think your
> group has something to offer, please put yourself forward!
