12. Lisa Chason - Military Recruitment in Schools
Lisa Chason reported that she and Carol Inskeep, Sue Davis and Sue
Keller have been working on the issue of military recruitment of high
school students. No Child Left Behind requires high schools to submit
names and contact information of students to the Dept of Defense or
lose federal funding. Families then receive a lot of mail and
telephone calls from recruiters. Parents or students can opt out but
they have to notify the school. Urbana High School had an item about
this in their Student Guidebook but it was not listed in the Table of
Contents, was not very clearly explained, and gave a sample letter
that the person then had to write and send in.This working group has
now gotten the UHS administration to agree to include in the next
issue of the Guidebook a single-page form that just has to be filled
in with the student's name and can be cut out, without losing any
info on the overside, and sent. This will be listed as an item in the
Table of Contents. They hope to have the page made available as a
handout at registration and other appropriate occassions. They are
also working to get the on-line version of the Guidebook to work
similarly. They are considering bringing this up in the Champaign
schools. Sandra suggested working with students who could submit the
info to the News-Gazette student spin page. Lisa made the point that
this certainly won't prevent recruitment -- recruiters are able to
get names and contact info about this age group from many other
sources besides the schools.
