Hiroshima Day Events

August 2005 will mark the 60th anniversary of the
atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan.
"Days of Remembrance" has been organized in an effort
to remember the victims of the bombings and the many
innocent people who die and suffer as a result of war
and to consider ways to work for a peaceful world.

On Friday, August 5, at 7 PM, Fred Lamb will give a
lecture entitled "Countering the Threat of Nuclear
Terrorism" at Loomis Laboratory of Physics, Goodwin &
Green, Urbana. Fred Lamb, a physics and astronomy
professor at the University of Illinois, is an expert
on nuclear weapons and arms control. He is co-founder
of the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Nuclear War.
Parking will be available at the Physics Building
(except for 24 hr. spaces) & Wesley Foundation.

On Tuesday, August 9, activities will begin at 6:30 PM
at the First United Methodist Church, Champaign with
the showing of a 30-minute film, "Sadako and the
Thousand Paper Cranes". Appropriate for ages 8 and
up, the film is about a Japanese girl who contracts
leukemia as a result of radiation from the atomic
bomb. Following the film, there will be opportunities
to make peace lanterns, paper cranes, and more. The
evening will conclude at 8:30 PM with a ceremony at
West Side Park in which participants may float the
peace lanterns in the pool. The floating of lanterns,
based on a Buddhist tradition, is a way to remember
the victims of the bombings and to send forth prayers
for peace.
