About Jonathon Shay

Jonathan Shay (M.D., Ph.D.) is a psychiatrist with a long experience treating the psychological damage combat inflicts on war veterans. He is a former Chair of Ethics, Leadership, and Personnel Policy in the US Army and is currently a psychiatrist in the Department of Veteran Affairs Outpatient Clinic in Boston. He began his career there in 1987 working with Vietnam veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and his books are informed by this work. The first, Achilles in Vietnam: Combat Trauma and the Undoing of Character, is an inquiry into Homer's Iliad as metaphor for the deforming effects of military combat on character (e.g., killing rage). His second book Odysseus in America: Combat Trauma and the Trials of Homecoming with a foreword by Senators John McCain and Max Cleland, brings the soldiers home. In the book Dr. Shay examines the generic obstacles to a flourishing life in a peaceful civilian world and lays out a program to prevent psychological and moral injury
 in military service.
