Anthony Shadid's "Night Draws Near:Iraq's People in the Shadow of America's War" (Henry Holt, 2005) provides a historical context for the response of the Iraqi people to the war and occupation and clearly reports the unacceptable effects the war is imposing on them.  Shadid is an Arabic-speaking American of Lebanese descent who won the Pulitzer Prize in 2004 for his reporting from Iraq for the Washington Post.
