Kim,
Has the location to gather at changed from Saturday???? At the meeting
Saturday I clearly remember that one of the gathering locations was the
Crystal Lake Pool parking lot and that is very different from the CL
Boathouse parking lot. I know Carol was concerned about starting location
interfering with the annual duck race. Which is the most current location?
Joan

Please disregard earlier press release in favor of the release below.
Former officer Hjort was NOT the best man in state's attorney Julia Rietz's
wedding, although he is a good friend of her husband's. Thanks. Sorry for
the error.

2nd Annual UNITY MARCH, October 8

Focus: Alternatives to Jail Expansion, Formation of a Citizens Review of
Police Practices, Investigation of Former Police Officer For Alleged Rape

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

A multi-racial, economically diverse coalition of citizens, social
service and social change organizations will descend upon the mall of the
Champaign County Courthouse for the second annual “Unity March,” Saturday,
October 8 at 10am.

“One of our goals is to prevent the expansion of our jails and to
redirect county money into prevention,” said Carol Ammons, co-founder of CU
Citizens for Peace and Justice, a grassroots organization that has helped
lead successful campaigns to stop Tasers from coming to Champaign police and
obtained a fair phone rate plan for jail inmates. “Right now the plan is to
build a new $20 million jail when only about $180,000 of county money goes
to prevention programs. We think this is the wrong priority.”

The march will also address the need for a citizens review of police
practices in both Champaign and Urbana and will push for criminal charges
against former Urbana police officer, Kurt Hjort, for allegedly raping a
store clerk while on duty. The officer has not been charged with a crime
but has resigned while an investigation is pending.

The march will begin at 10am in two different locations and will join
together at the court house. Residents who live north of University Avenue
will meet at the Crystal Lake Boat House in Crystal Lake Park. Residents
south of University Ave. will meet at the south patio of the Illini Union.

“The unity march will bring people from the campus and community and the
north and south ends together,” Ms Ammons said.

                                                                      - 30 -
