The yellow cab has become a striking metaphor for the New York City and
its exuberant twenty-four-hours-a-day rush. An immigrant working class in
an industry that pioneered outsourcing, taxi drivers have a tough job with
long hours and low earnings. They represent more than 90 countries and
work 12 hours a day, six and sometimes seven days a week barely making
above the minimum wage. More than 90% of the cab drivers are recent
immigrants from the third world. Founded in 1998, the New York Taxi
Workers' Alliance (NYTWA) has been instrumental in organizing around
issues of fair wages and better work-environment for cab drivers.

If you missed Biju Mathew's talk “Cabs and Capitalism” on 4/19 or couldn't
fit into the packed room of 100+ people in Lincoln Hall...

Tune in 90.1FM (WEFT) Sunday 10A-11AM, (4/23/06) for Prairie Grassroots
with host Lori Serb. I will be broadcasting the “Cabs and Capitalism”
talk.
AND as a bonus for Pledge Drive, I will be offering a hardback copy of his
book (quantity is limited):

“TAXI!: Cabs and Capitalism in New York City”

to anyone who calls in during the hour (359-9338) and pledges $65 or more
to Prairie Grassroots! Please consider supporting independent sound
engineers and community activists who volunteer their time to produce
quality programming on WEFT.
