UFPJ needs funds. Our dues would be $50/year. Let's put this on the
agenda. --mkb

> Dear Member Organization of UFPJ,
>
> UFPJ began in 2002 as a national coalition to bring together a
> broad range of organizations throughout the United States to help
> coordinate work against a U.S. war on Iraq. Since then, our
> membership has grown to more than 1,300 member groups – including
> yours. Together, we have organized hundreds of local protests,
> vigils and rallies against the war and some of the biggest anti-war
> demonstrations the country has seen. As the largest peace and
> justice coalition in the work, we have nurtured a movement.
>
> Because of our combined efforts, (most recently on Sept. 24-26 with
> 300,000+ people on the streets of Washington DC, nearly 1000 people
> lobbying Congress and almost 400 people arrested in a nonviolent
> civil disobedience action at the White House), huge spaces are
> opening for the anti-war movement: Representative Murtha calling
> for troop withdrawal, the indictment of Libby Scooter, Bush polling
> at rock-bottom in public opinion, and majority sentiment throughout
> the country opposed to the war.
>
> *The work of United for Peace and Justice and its 1,300+ member
> organizations is critical, and our organizing efforts need
> financial support. *
>
> At the February, 2005 National Assembly in St. Louis - which your
> group participated in - the structure of UFPJ was amended to make
> membership dues a part of the responsibility of member organizations.
>
> */We still have not received your dues for 2005, and are now also
> in need of your 2006 contribution. Please contribute these dues so
> that UFPJ can continue to do the critical work to end the war on
> Iraq./*
>
> We need your help to keep hammering away at the Bush administration
> and its policies, as well as the pro-war members of Congress. They
> are on the run. This presents us with real opportunities for
> stopping this senseless and illegal war on the Iraqi people, and
> instead using the much-needed monies to fund our schools and
> communities, our social programs and infrastructure.
>
> In order to build our coalition and make it an even more effective
> tool, in order to mobilize actions for the 3rd anniversary of the
> War on Iraq in March 2006, build and strengthen our legislative
> action network and support our organizing capacity nationwide. In
> order to ready the peace movement in the case of further assaults
> on the Middle East and beyond, United for Peace and Justice needs
> your financial support.
>
> *We ask that your organization contribute the suggested dues amount
> for a member group of your size*. The dues scale calls for a
> contribution of $50-500, which was approved by member groups at the
> 2005 National Assembly in St. Louis.

> Member group dues are a vital source of financial support for the
> coalition. While we receive some support from progressive
> foundations, the vast majority of our budget is funded by
> individuals and member group contributions.
>
> We know that budgets are tight around the country, and that many of
> our member groups lack funding for local activism and travel to
> national demonstrations. In order to assist you with meeting your
> own funding goals and to provide a way for you to meet your dues
> commitment to UFPJ, we will soon be sending you ideas for
> fundraising events, grants and other techniques to help your group
> raise money. We hope that you will find this information useful,

> We all have a common goal: to end the war on Iraq and bring all of
> our troops home. In order to accomplish this goal, we need to work
> together and support each other.
>
> Thank you for being an integral part of the United for Peace and
> Justice coalition. We look forward to continuing working with you
> in ending this war, so that we can work to wage peace instead.
