Subject: [cokeactiongroup] SEJ rally on Quad on November 15

:
: Rally Against Sweatshops, presented by Students for Economic Justice:
: 12:30pm, Wednesday, November 15 on the Quad.
:
: Garment workers who sew University of Illinois Apparel deserve decent
: wages and the right to organize. Last fall, a national student
: organization, United Students Against Sweatshops, called on U.S. colleges
: and universities to adopt new standards to ensure that workers in the
: collegiate apparel industry work for fair wages under decent working
: conditions in factories that respect their right to organize. The
: proposed policy, called the Designated Suppliers Program, obligates
: companies licensed to make university apparel (e.g., Nike, Adidas, etc.)
: to do so in factors that have been determined by the Worker Rights
: Consortium (an independent monitoring organization that the University of
: Illinois and many other universities are members of) to respect workers'
: rights.
:
: So far, about thirty colleges and universities, including such schools as
: Duke, Georgetown, UIowa, UW-Madison, and the University of California
: system, have agreed to this proposal and are currently working towards
: implementing it. Unfortunately, the University of Illinois administration
: remains opposed to the program. It is now more than a year since the
: program was proposed, and the implementation date is fast approaching. It
: is time for the University of Illinois to end its obstinance and lend its
: support to the goal of achieving decent working conditions in the
: collegiate apparel industry.
:
: Join Students for Economic Justice for a rally against sweatshops,
: Wednesday, November 14 at 12:30pm. We'll start on the Quad and then walk
: over the Swanlund Administration Building, where several students will
: deliver petitions and informational material to Chancellor Herman and ask
: him to support the Designated Suppliers Program.
