Iris Morales - Guest-in-Residence at Unit One/Allen Hall 10/15-10/19 

  Iris Morales, activist, media artist, and attorney, will be in-residence at Unit One/Allen Hall 10/15-10/19. She will be talking, leading discussions, screening films, and giving workshops each evening of her residency. See below for her schedule. She is the producer/director of !Palante, Siempre Palante! The Young Lords, a documentary about Puerto Rican/Latino activism in the 1960s and 70s. She was a leading member of the Young Lords and organizer of its Women's Union. Today, Iris directs an organization providing resources to community and arts organizations in New York City, works with grassroots groups on social justice issues, and conducts workshops on media activism. Current media projects include websites and blogs about immigration, and film shorts and articles documenting Latino historical experience in the United States.

  Sunday, October 15 
  7:00 p.m. - Opening Program: Power to the People: The Struggle for Social Justice.         Understanding history and past resistance struggles is important for building today's social justice movements. History provides us with models and paradigms of what is possible, informs our imagination and sustains our vision. Iris will discuss her work and experiences as a student and community organizer, filmmaker, and media activist. (In the south rec room of Allen Hall)



          
Monday, October 16 
  7:00 p.m. - !Palante, Siempre Palante! The Young Lords, Film screening and Q & A.          !Palante, Siempre Palante! The Young Lords was broadcast on national public television as part of the critically acclaimed POV: The American Documentary series. It has screened at film festivals across the United States and the Caribbean. The documentary is also widely screened at high schools, colleges and community organizations across the country. (In the Main Lounge of Allen Hall)



  9:00 p.m. - The Dialogue Continues. !Palante, Siempre Palante!          Puerto Rican history, racism, and sexism represented in film are basis for discussion. (In the Main Lounge of Allen Hall)

  12:00pm - Achieving Social Justice: the Role of Latino Youth - lunchtime dialogue at La Casa Cultural Latina, 1203 W. Nevada, U

  7:00 p.m. - Sixties Movements: The Young Lords and the Black Panthers - Presented by Iris Morales, former Young Lord and Professor Sundiata Cha-Jua, Director of the African American Studies and Research Program at UIUC
        In the sixties and seventies, the Black Panther Party led the national liberation movement in the United States. The Young Lords organized the Puerto Rican community, and the two organizations worked closely in Chicago, New York and other cities. What did the organizations accomplish and what relevancy do these social movements have for today? (In the Main Lounge of Allen Hall)

  9:00 p.m. - The People Rise Up! El Pueblo Se Levanta! Film screening         This cinema verite style film captures the Young Lords in action in East Harlem. In the late 1960s, conditions for Puerto Ricans in the United States reached the boiling point. Faced with racial discrimination, inadequate community services, and poor education and job opportunities, Puerto Rican communities took direct action to address injustices. Iris will answer questions about her participation in the organization and in the film. (In the Main Lounge of Allen Hall)



  Wednesday, October 18 
  12:00pm -Achieving Social Justice: the Role of African American Youth - Lunch and Learn dialogue at African American Cultural Program 708 S. Matthews, U

  7:00 p.m. - U.S. Immigration Policy - Is citizen/non citizen divide the new apartheid?         200,000 immigrants are imprisoned annually under a law of mandatory detention. Iris will present a website/blog she created as a jumping off point for discussing immigration policy. The website features video interviews with former detainees and members of Families for Freedom, photographs, downloadable resources, and a brief history of immigration policy in the U.S. (In the Main Lounge of Allen Hall)



  9:00 p.m. - "We are all Writers" Workshop.         Small group workshop encourages writing and self-_expression in a non-judgmental, open and respectful community. Through writing exercises and reading aloud, we experience how each person, through writing, shapes and influences the lives of others. No prior writing experience is necessary. Limited to Allen Hall students. (In the South Rec Room of Allen Hall)



  Thursday, October 19 
  7:00 p.m. - Documentary Filmmaking Workshop         This introductory workshop focuses on production basics. What are important questions to ask at the beginning? What are key ethical and legal considerations? What goes into production planning? Iris will screen a short film, Barrio Memories, a personal view of migration and place within a broader historical narrative. (In the South Rec Room of Allen Hall)



  9:00 p.m. - From Bomba to Hip Hop - Celebrate with Puerto Rican Music!         Enjoy Puerto Rican music; bring your favorite songs and dancing shoes. Iris will bring hers. Snacks and drinks provided. (In the Main Lounge of Allen Hall)
