The IDF Annual
Fall Dinner

Feat. James Thindwa

Saturday, Nov. 4
Doors open at 5pm
1st Floor, IDF

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On Saturday, November 4th, the Illinois Disciples Foundation (IDF) will be
hosting its annual Fall Dinner. The IDF is a pioneering campus ministry
with the mission of peace with social justice. Since its inception in 1905
the IDF and its programs have been at the forefront of many peace with
justice struggles including the civil rights movement, the struggle
against the Vietnam War, the fight for the Equal Rights Amendment, the
Sanctuary movement, the struggle to eliminate U of I's racist mascot,
"Chief Illiniwek," and current anti-war work around the wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan.
James Thindwa will deliver the keynote address, entitled, "Intersecting
Workers Rights, Living Wages and Undocumented Workers." His address will
locate immigration in the context of global economic policies that favor
corporate profits at the expense of worker and community interests.
Thindwa is calling on Congress to ease the path to legalization,
strengthen the rights of all workers to organize, and to enact a national
living wage. Finally, Thindwa will discuss how the construction of border
walls violates the spirit of triumph, openness and freedom Americans
celebrate, especially in this post-Cold War, post-Berlin Wall period and
is not the answer to solving immigration concerns.
Thindwa has been the Executive Director of Chicago Jobs with Justice since
2002. In his more than twenty-two years of organizing, he has: worked on
health care reform to stop the privatization of Medicare and Medicaid,
participated in anti-apartheid movements, organized for utility rate
reform, fought in opposition to nuclear energy, worked for environmental
advocacy, and much more.
On November 4th, the doors at the Fall Dinner will open at 5pm and the
keynote speaker will commence at 6:45pm. A dinner will be served prior to
the speaker. More details on the menu will be coming soon, but the meal
will include both meat and vegetarian options. It will be held in
Wisegarver Lounge, located on the first floor of the Illinois Disciples
Foundation. The event is wheelchair accessible. The IDF is located at the
northwest corner of Springfield and Wright streets in Champaign. Limited
free parking is available.
The menu will include grilled chicken, penne pasta with marinara sauce and
green salad catered by Foudini's, as well as food donated from Jerusalem
Restaurant, which will include falafel, hummus, rice, Lebanese salad and
lentil soup. The menu is all-vegan except for chicken entree.
Dinner tickets are $20 each, but no one will be turned away for lack of
funds. Raffle tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. The tickets are on sale in
the IDF office, at the door, and online. Last year's raffle prizes
included t-shirts from local organizations, gift certificates to various
restaurants, jewelry, and original art work from Old Vic's Art Gallery as
the grand prize. You do not need to be present to win a raffle prize!
AND this year tickets can be purchased online via PayPal at
http://www.prairienet.org/idf/store/store.html#dinner. Purchase your
dinner tickets BEFORE Oct. 28th and get $5 off!
All of the proceeds raised at this event will go to further the IDF's
peace with justice mission.
This event is being cosponsored by: Activist Forum, Campus Greens, Central
Illinois Jobs with Justice, Champaign County Health Care Consumers,
Channing-Murray Foundation, Coalition Against Coke Contracts, Prairie
Greens, Progressive Resource/Action Cooperative (PRC), and Vietnam
Veterans Against the War.
