Dear friends of CIMIC,
On Monday, April 9th, right after the evening prayers, (7:45pm),
there will be a presentation and a documentary showing by members of the
Coalition of Immokalee Workers at the Central Illinois Mosque and
Islamic Center. Some Immokalee Workers themselves will be present to
answer questions and provide information about their situation.
They are on a tour on their way to Chicago to present to others
the reality of their working conditions as tomato pickers. They are
currently trying to negotiate with McDonalds to get paid a penny more
per pound of tomatoes.
The Immokalee workers are low wage workers in the state of
Florida. The majority of them earn a living by picking tomatoes and
citrus fruits, which are then supplied across the country. Over the
years, they have been subjected to a number of unfair and at times
illegal working conditions. In 2001 a boycott was launched against Taco
Bell because of their refusal to pay a penny more per pound of tomatoes.
The boycott ended in 2005 with both sides coming to an agreement.
The Central Illinois Mosque and Islamic Center is located at 106
S Lincoln in Urbana. Please enter from Busey Street.
