Dear CIMIC Announcement List subscribers,

Just a short note to let everybody know that today, Monday the 9th of
April, some of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers will be presenting
at CIMIC their story and struggle. The presentation will start 7:45
PM.

They are on a tour on their way to Chicago to present to others the
reality of their working conditions as tomato pickers. They are
currently trying to negotiate with McDonalds to get paid a penny more
per pound of tomatoes.

The Immokalee workers are low wage workers in the state of Florida.
The majority of them earn a living by picking tomatoes and citrus
fruits, which are then supplied across the country. Over the years,
they have been subjected to a number of unfair and at times illegal
working conditions. In 2001 a boycott was launched against Taco Bell
because of their refusal to pay a penny more per pound of tomatoes.
The boycott ended in 2005 with both sides coming to an agreement.
