[Peace] RE: [Peace-discuss] Advisory referendum on the Primary ballot 2008

I also thank Durl and Jan and Mort and Jamie and Barbara and everyone
else. No-one will be surprised to know that I am particularly
enthusiastic about the referendum against war with Iran. I believe
that Urbana is the first community in the country to succeed in
putting such a referendum in place. (The Berkeley and Portland city
councils have passed resolutions.)

It's a shame that the use of this tool is not more widespread in
Illinois. There were some efforts in the Chicago area, some of them
successful - there will be an Iraq referendum in Berwyn, for example.

Hopefully, next year there will be more efforts and more successes in
more Illinois communities...it may be that the ability next year to
act in April to put a referendum on the ballot in November will make
the effort more attractive.

There was some coverage of the referenda on WILL this morning. AWARE
was mentioned, and the successful referenda last year (I'm sorry to
report that my interpretation that "Champaign-Urbana" passed the
impeachment referendum has not been adopted by our local media,
although Mike Monson reported it in the News-Gazette at the time.)
