The Backlash Against Immigrants Increases
Call Your Senators September 6-7 and Insist on Comprehensive Immigration Reform
by Bill Mefford

Several weeks ago the Bush administration released its proposal for a crackdown on undocumented immigration. The proposal contained 26 points to focus the work of the Department of Homeland Security. Among these points are plans for more deportations and detentions with no regulations of detention centers, further use of local law enforcement to enforce federal immigration laws, and increased militarization of the border, which can only lead to more border deaths and wasteful spending. Enforcement-only approaches will not solve this issue.

Congress has not only failed to pass comprehensive immigration reform, but has failed even to introduce a bill that includes the necessary principles of CIR:
    * a pathway to citizenship for all undocumented migrants,
    * full protections for migrant workers,
    * and the reunification of families separated by migration.

The backlash against immigrants has been fierce. Currently before the Senate is another legislation (S. 1984) which will build more fences, build more detention centers with limited regulations, and increase arrests and deportations such as the recent deportation of Elvira Arellano. (To read the MARCHA press release on Elvira Arellano, see http://www.umc-gbcs.org/site/apps/nl/content.asp?c=fsJNK0PKJrH&b=3189219&ct=4301185.)

Congress and the Bush administration have failed to show the necessary leadership to answer the immigration question.

When the call for genuine, moral and effective leadership falls on the deaf ears of Congress and the Bush administration, it is time for the people to answer.

On September 6th and 7th, call 1-800-732-9404 and tell your Senators:
    * to say NO to S. 1984, the Immigration Enforcement and Border Security Act of 2007,
    * to say YES to passing comprehensive immigration reform, which will provide a pathway to citizenship for all undocumented migrants, protections for migrant workers, and the reunification of families separated by migration.

Please pass on this information to your friends, families so that we can make as many calls as possible and our voice can be heard.
